Norse Atlantic Airways Adopts AI Robots To Enhance Sustainability And Efficiency
  • Norse Atlantic Airways is using AI robots to cut fuel use by 2%, recycle glycol for de-icing, and speed up aircraft inspections by 90%.
  • The AI robots reduce costs, save water, and can reduce up to 1,800 kilos of CO2 emissions per de-icing.
  • The robots will first operate at Oslo Airport and then expand to London Gatwick, aiming to make aviation more efficient and eco-friendly.

Norse Atlantic Airways, the emerging low-cost airline, has made a strategic move towards enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency by integrating AI robots into its fleet management processes.

These AI robots will play a pivotal role in de-icing aircraft, recycling glycol used in the de-icing process, and conducting technical inspections.

This innovative approach aims to reduce carbon emissions, lower costs, and streamline operations, aligning with Norse Atlantic Airways’ commitment to environmental responsibility and operational excellence.

A Greener Approach To Aircraft Maintenance

In a statement released on November 21, Chief Operating Officer Thom-Arne Norheim expressed the airline’s enthusiasm for exploring sustainable solutions.

He stated, “The solution from Avinxt is one of several initiatives that can help us reduce our carbon footprint while at the same time reducing our costs.

That is a win-win. At Norse Atlantic, we are always keen to explore intuitive partners and find solutions to automate and streamline our operations, allowing us to be more efficient, punctual, and cost-effective, particularly during winter operations.”

One of the key benefits of employing AI robots in aircraft maintenance is the significant reduction in air resistance, resulting in lower fuel consumption during flights.

By utilizing Avinxt’s technology for washing aircraft, Norse Atlantic Airways can achieve up to a 2% reduction in fuel burn.

Additionally, regular engine washing provided by these robots can lead to a 1.8% decrease in fuel consumption, keeping the engines operating efficiently.

Notably, these washes can utilize rainwater storage, contributing to sustainable practices and reducing the strain on local water supplies. Avintrix reports that up to 95% of the water used in these processes can be effectively filtered and reused.

One of the significant challenges in cold-weather operations is aircraft de-icing, where glycol is traditionally employed.

Avinxt’s AI robots promise a revolutionary approach by collecting 90% of the glycol used during the de-icing process. This not only reduces costs for airlines but also delivers substantial environmental benefits.

Ove Trøen, CEO and Chairman of Avinxt, highlighted the environmental impact, stating, “Recycling of liquids on site not only reduces the cost for airlines that need to de-ice their planes before take-off, but it also adds significant environmental benefits.

Our calculations show that collecting and recycling all liquids used … can save as much as 1,800 kilos of CO2 per de-icing of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.”

Time-efficient Aircraft Inspections

Incorporating AI robots, such as those offered by Avinxt, is poised to revolutionize aircraft inspections. These robots are expected to reduce inspection times by an impressive 90%, making it possible to detect and address aircraft damage swiftly.

In scenarios where damage from lightning strikes or unexpected ground equipment impacts is suspected, expedited inspections can lead to repairs within hours instead of the conventional several-week timeframe.

Norse Atlantic Airways plans to introduce these AI robots initially at Oslo Airport, with further deployment at its hub in London Gatwick.

Ove Trøen of Avinxt emphasized the potential of this technology, stating,

“There is no reason why airports, airlines, the air force, and ground handlers should continue with manual, time-consuming, and expensive processes when we can do it faster, better, more environmentally friendly, and more cost-effective by using new technology.”

As aviation seeks ways to reduce its environmental impact, every effort counts, especially in light of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) goal to reduce emissions by 5% by 2030.

Norse Atlantic Airways’ investment in AI robots for aircraft maintenance signifies a significant step towards greener and more efficient operations within the aviation industry.

With a strong commitment to sustainability and cost-effectiveness, Norse Atlantic Airways is setting an example for the industry.

The integration of AI robots into aircraft maintenance processes not only enhances environmental responsibility but also underscores the airline’s dedication to delivering top-notch service to its passengers.
