The city’s longest-serving Financial Secretary, John Tsang Chun-wah, will launch 3,000 non-fungible tokens (NFT) of his portrait, making him the first Hong Kong civil servant to profit from the trend.
Since the handover, Tsang has been the longest-serving Financial Secretary.
In the 2017 election, he was defeated by outgoing Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor.
Tsang announced on Monday that the former civil servant’s NFT will be created in partnership with Japanese artist Yosuke Yamauchi.
Tsang is unlikely to be bound by Hong Kong’s post-service prohibitions on civil workers benefitting from their former positions.
The title of the NFT collection, “Choi Yeah,” or “God of Fortune” in Cantonese, refers to Hong Kong’s financial secretaries.
Tsang stated that the owners will have first access to his next Web 3.0 project, which he has yet to reveal.
Carrie Lam’s decision to leave public service coincided with the announcement.
Tsang claimed the date was “completely unrelated to any other news.”
