California Cannabis Producer Adopts Blockchain to Track its Weed

Clones will be validated using a blockchain smart contract to verify their legitimacy and genetic lineage.

A cannabis nursery in California has used blockchain and smart contracts to ensure the authenticity of its medical plants.

On January 13, the EMTRI project and software firm Global Compliance Applications announced a cooperation with the cannabis nursery Mendocino Clone Company.

It will use the blockchain capabilities of the project to certify all clones, or young plants, with a batch certificate.

Cannabis nurseries are businesses that specialise in plant genetics, creating clones, baby plants, and seeds for wholesale distribution.

The move enables the nursery to “record the early stages of a cannabis plant’s path to becoming a premium product for consumers depending on the gramme weight it blossoms,” according to the company.

Each clone batch’s batch certificate is a self-generated smart contract. It gives each infant plant its own “unique identity block,” which the nursery creates and links to its Ethereum-based blockchain.

Its clientele, who include commercial farms and retail dispensaries, will be able to utilise this to check the validity of their clones and genetic ancestry, according to the company.

The first batch of certificate clones will be available beginning in the first week of February.

Furthermore, licenced farmers that purchase Mendocino clones will receive EMTRI token (EMT) prizes and preferential pricing for participating in the blockchain initiative.

EMT was introduced in November 2022 to provide incentives to project participants. The tokens can be traded for USDC on Uniswap or staked for additional payouts. EMT is not listed on any centralised exchange or data site for the cryptocurrency market, such as CoinGecko.

Scott Zarnes, co-founder of EMTRI Corp, stated:

“We are excited to be at the forefront of the cannabis industry becoming the first in the United States to adopt this cutting-edge technology in this manner,”

However, combining cryptocurrency and cannabis is not a novel idea. Cannaland, a cannabis-themed Metaverse project, was established in November to build a virtual world for cannabis fans. A custom pipe maker debuted tokenized bongs in January 2022, with celebrities such as Snoop Dogg and Santana buying up the NFTs.

As early as 2014, projects like PotCoin (POT) and CannabisCoin (CANN) tried to establish a digital currency specialised to the industry, but they never truly took off.
