The metropolises have joined a growing network of cities that accept China’s digital yuan, which can now be used to recharge Guangzhou city trams and Xiamen’s city public transportation card.
Passengers on Guangzhou’s Tram Line 1 can now pay for fares using the digital yuan app’s payment QR code, according to local media.
Beginning May 6, Xiamen city’s public transit swipe cards can be refilled with digital yuan, according to local media.
According to the report, Xiamen’s public transportation system will soon allow users to pay fares using a digital yuan payment QR code.
At least 12 of China’s 23 digital pilot towns, including Guangzhou and Xiamen, have begun to accept such payments on their public transit networks.
The digital yuan, or e-CNY, is China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), which started public testing in October 2020 and is now being piloted in 23 locations around the country.
China’s central bank said in January that total e-CNY transactions had reached 87.565 billion yuan (US$11.238 billion) by the end of 2021.
