On Monday, Andy O’Connell, vice president of product policy and strategy at Meta Platforms, Inc., and representatives from South Korea’s official media regulating agency met to talk about methods to improve user protection on the metaverse.
According to reports in the local media, O’Connell and Meta (formerly known as Facebook Inc.) were encouraged to work together on safety in developing virtual platforms like the metaverse by Ahn Hyoung-hwan, the vice chairman of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC).
Ahn and O’Connell also talked about algorithm transparency on digital platforms and stopping the spread of unlawful material.
Virtual reality (VR) technology supports Horizon Worlds, a metaverse platform run by Meta that is accessible to users in North America and some regions of Europe.
As a result of reports of users being sexually assaulted on Horizon Worlds, Meta implemented a personal boundary system that places users’ avatars four feet away from everyone except for chosen friends.
The Korea Communications Commission established a committee earlier this year to forbid such conduct as South Korea battles the existence of sexual predators on the metaverse.
