Crypto wallets are sanctioned by the US Treasury as fentanyl enforcement intensifies

Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo, as per his statement, revealed that the sanctioned cryptocurrency wallets had “received millions of USD through numerous deposits” that were used for the illicit drug trade. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) within the United States Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions on cryptocurrency wallets purportedly associated with individuals and entities deeply entangled in the production of fentanyl. In an announcement made on October 3rd, the U.S. Department of Justice unveiled indictments against several Chinese chemical manufacturers and a significant number of their personnel. These individuals allegedly employed cryptocurrency transactions as a key component of an illicit fentanyl precursor distribution scheme. U.S. authorities assert that these companies frequently employ cryptocurrency transactions to obscure their identities and the flow of their funds. They have identified at least three individuals who managed cryptocurrency wallets for these transactions. OFAC has included Bitcoin, USD Coin, and Tron (TRX) wallets connected to Chinese nationals and Valerian Labs on its list of Specially Designated Nationals, along with companies such as Hanhong Pharmaceutical Technology and Hebei Crovell Biotech. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo has emphasized that this enforcement action was designed to disrupt an illicit drug network. Adeyemo remarked, “[W]e have successfully identified and frozen over a dozen virtual currency wallets linked to these culprits. The frozen wallets, which received millions of USD through numerous deposits, vividly illustrate the extent and magnitude of the operation that was targeted today.” Numerous lawmakers have passionately urged for decisive measures to combat the distribution of fentanyl within the United States, a substance responsible for a staggering 67,000 deaths in 2021 alone. Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, a vocal critic of digital assets, drew attention to potential connections between cryptocurrency payments and drug trafficking during a hearing in May. The first week of October also marked the 10th year of imprisonment for Ross Ulbricht, the mastermind behind the Silk Road online marketplace. While the platform faced extensive criticism for facilitating the drug trade through digital asset payments, Ulbricht still garners support within the cryptocurrency community.
