First Bitcoin ETP to Launch in the UK: BTCE to Trade on Aquis Exchange

The ETC Group, a leading cryptocurrency investment manager, is set to launch its flagship Bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) in the United Kingdom. Trading under the ticker symbol BTCE, the product will debut on the Aquis Exchange in London and Paris on June 7, 2021, marking a significant milestone for the UK’s cryptocurrency market.

What is BTCE?

BTCE is a 100% physically backed Bitcoin ETP that offers institutional and retail investors exposure to Bitcoin. The product debuted on Germany’s Xetra digital stock exchange in June 2020 and has quickly gained popularity among investors.

Expansion to the UK Market

The ETC Group is leveraging Swiss market rules to bring BTCE to the UK, bypassing the more stringent cryptocurrency regulations currently in place.

Bradley Duke, CEO of the ETC Group, commented:

“Bringing our flagship Bitcoin product to Aquis Exchange was a logical step as institutional demand for exposure to crypto grows around the world.”

Institutional Demand for Bitcoin

With inflation fears mounting globally, institutional investors are increasingly turning to Bitcoin as a hedge against rising prices. BTCE provides a regulated, liquid, and secure option for investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin through traditional stock exchanges.

Aquis Exchange: Supporting Innovation

Alasdair Haynes, CEO of Aquis Exchange, emphasized the growing importance of cryptocurrency as an asset class:

“Cryptocurrency is now a bona fide asset class, giving investors more options for achieving a balanced portfolio.”

He added that Aquis Exchange has a history of innovation, allowing traders to access emerging asset classes in a regulated environment.

Key Features of BTCE

  1. Physically Backed: BTCE is fully backed by Bitcoin, providing investors direct exposure to the cryptocurrency.
  2. Regulated Environment: Trading on the Aquis Exchange ensures a transparent and regulated trading platform.
  3. Accessibility: Available to institutional and retail investors, BTCE is designed to simplify access to Bitcoin through traditional financial markets.

A Step Forward for UK Cryptocurrency Adoption

The launch of BTCE on the Aquis Exchange marks the first cryptocurrency ETP to trade in the UK, signaling a growing acceptance of digital assets in mainstream financial markets. This development comes at a time when global demand for cryptocurrency investment products is at an all-time high.

Conclusion

The debut of BTCE in the UK market represents a pivotal moment for cryptocurrency adoption, providing a regulated and accessible way for investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin. As institutional interest in digital assets continues to grow, products like BTCE are poised to play a crucial role in the evolving financial landscape.
