Last week, Google announced a sweeping redesign of its search engine, replacing the familiar list of blue links with an AI agent that answers queries, executes tasks, and runs background monitoring. The reaction from users has been swift and sharp. A growing number are turning to DuckDuckGo, the privacy-focused search engine that has long struggled to gain traction against Google’s dominance.

Users reject ‘force-fed’ AI

DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg said Tuesday that Google is “force-feeding AI with no way to opt out,” and that the changes are making search results worse. The company reported that U.S. app installs rose 18.1% week-over-week on average between May 20 and May 25, compared to the previous week. Growth peaked at 30.5% on May 25. On iOS, the increase was even more pronounced, with a 33% average weekly gain and a peak of 69.9%.

Visits to DuckDuckGo’s AI-free search page, noai.duckduckgo.com, also climbed sharply. The page disables all AI features by default, including AI-assisted answers and AI-generated images. The company said weekly growth for that page averaged 22.7%, peaking at 27.7% on May 24.

Why this matters

The backlash against Google’s AI search overhaul reflects a deeper tension between convenience and control. Critics argue that AI overviews can surface inaccurate information, complicate simple queries, and strip users of the ability to choose how they interact with search. The word “disregard” itself has become a symbol of the problem: searching for it now returns an AI-generated summary rather than the expected list of links.

DuckDuckGo has long positioned itself as a privacy-first alternative, but its market share has remained around 2% in the U.S. During Google’s antitrust trial in 2023, Weinberg testified that Google’s exclusive default search contracts made it nearly impossible for DuckDuckGo to compete on an even playing field. The current shift suggests that product changes, not just legal battles, may be driving user behavior.

DuckDuckGo’s own AI offerings

Despite its stance against forced AI, DuckDuckGo does offer its own AI tools. Duck.ai provides free, private access to models from Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, and OpenAI. The company says it strips user IP addresses before requests reach model providers, deletes conversations within 30 days, and does not use chats for training. DuckDuckGo also offers Search Assist, similar to Google’s AI overviews, and an AI Image Filter that removes AI-generated images from results.

Kamyl Bazbaz, DuckDuckGo’s chief communications and policy officer, said both features are among the company’s most popular. “People just want a choice,” he said.

Conclusion

The surge in DuckDuckGo installs signals that a meaningful segment of users is willing to switch search engines over concerns about AI integration and privacy. While Google’s changes may improve search for some, they have also created an opening for competitors that prioritize user control. The question now is whether this momentum will translate into lasting market share gains for DuckDuckGo, or whether it represents a temporary spike driven by a vocal minority.

FAQs

Q1: Why are users switching from Google to DuckDuckGo?
Many users are unhappy with Google’s AI search overhaul, which replaces traditional links with AI-generated answers. They object to being unable to opt out of AI features and are concerned about privacy and accuracy.

Q2: Does DuckDuckGo use AI at all?
Yes, DuckDuckGo offers optional AI features like Duck.ai and Search Assist, but users can turn them off. The company emphasizes that all AI interactions are private and not used for training.

Q3: How much has DuckDuckGo’s usage grown?
U.S. app installs rose 18.1% week-over-week on average from May 20 to May 25, peaking at 30.5%. iOS installs saw a 33% average weekly increase, peaking at 69.9%.
