OpenAI on Monday introduced ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated version of its AI chatbot designed for users under 18, adding new safety protections and a Study Mode feature aimed at reducing harmful content exposure and addressing academic cheating concerns that have plagued the platform since its debut.

Why now: addressing years of safety gaps

The launch follows a series of lawsuits and public outcry over AI chatbots’ lack of safety measures, which critics allege have contributed to teen suicides and other mental health issues. OpenAI’s new teen offering aims to respond to these concerns by implementing app-appropriate protections by default, based on the company’s Under-18 Principles in its Model Spec, which it says are informed by developmental science and expert guidance.

Study Mode: a tool to curb cheating and encourage learning

In addition to safety, OpenAI is tackling the educational crisis of ChatGPT-assisted cheating. The new Study Mode feature provides guiding questions and step-by-step support to help teens understand material rather than simply receiving answers. The system also includes homework reminders that appear when a teen appears to be attempting to cheat, nudging them to use Study Mode instead. The app supports quizzes, learning visualizations, and parental controls that allow guardians to set Study Mode as the default.

How effective will these measures be?

While the new features are promising, it remains unclear how difficult it will be for teens to bypass these systems. Teens are known for adeptly working around parental controls and other digital restrictions. Until ChatGPT for Teens undergoes more strenuous testing, the real-world efficacy of these safety measures is uncertain.

Partnerships and classroom integration

OpenAI also announced a partnership with CodeAI to help teens learn about AI, including how it works, how to direct or question it, and how to use it responsibly. In the classroom, OpenAI already offers ChatGPT for Teachers, providing schools with institution-managed access to AI and support. These initiatives aim to integrate AI into education in a controlled, constructive manner.

Conclusion

OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens marks a significant step toward safer AI interactions for younger users, but its success hinges on the effectiveness of its safeguards and the ability to adapt to evolving workarounds. As the product rolls out, continued scrutiny and testing will determine whether it truly meets the needs of teens, parents, and educators.
