Chief AI scientist at Meta claims that AI won’t endanger people.

The Chief AI Scientist at Meta, Yann LeCun, has raised his voice on the issue of existential threats posed by AI, dismissing them as premature and preposterous. In an interview with the Financial Times on October 19, LeCun expressed his belief that early regulations on AI technology would only serve to consolidate the dominance of major tech corporations, stifling competition. He went on to declare, “Regulating research and development in AI is incredibly counterproductive,” accusing regulators of employing the pretext of AI safety for what he termed “regulatory capture.”

The surge in AI’s prominence, catalyzed by the advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4 in November 2022, has prompted various industry thought leaders to sound the alarm about potential threats to humanity. Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the “godfather of AI,” stepped down from his role in machine learning at Google to devote his efforts to “raising awareness about the perils of AI.” Similarly, Dan Hendrycks, Director of the Center for AI Safety, took to Twitter in May to emphasize the urgency of addressing AI’s existential risk, equating it to global priorities such as pandemics and nuclear war.

In contrast, Yann LeCun, in his recent interview, contested the notion that AI might bring about humanity’s demise, branding it as “preposterous.” He argued that the existential risk debate remains in its infancy until we possess a system design capable of rivaling a cat’s learning abilities, a milestone not yet reached. LeCun also asserted that contemporary AI models fall short of their touted capabilities, lacking a profound understanding of the world and the ability to plan and reason.

According to LeCun’s vision, AI’s ultimate role lies in enhancing our daily lives, becoming the medium through which we interact with the digital world. Nevertheless, apprehensions regarding the power of AI persist, as a UK AI task force adviser has issued a warning that AI could pose a threat to humanity within the next two years.
