Coinbase Employees Celebrate Marriage with NFT Rings on Ethereum

Amid the ongoing NFT frenzy, two Coinbase employees have pushed the boundaries of digital innovation by tokenizing their marriage. Rebecca Rose and Peter Kacherginsky marked their union on the Ethereum blockchain by exchanging non-fungible token (NFT) rings, blending tradition with technology in a truly unique way.

A Marriage of Blockchain and Tradition

On March 14, the San Francisco-based couple tied the knot through a conventional Jewish ceremony and also exchanged virtual rings minted as NFTs. Rebecca Rose announced the milestone on Twitter on April 3, sharing their unique approach to celebrating love in both the physical and virtual worlds.

The couple created a token titled “Tabaat”, Hebrew for “ring.” Developed by Peter, the 2-of-a-kind NFT was stored on Ethereum’s blockchain. The artwork was animated by Carl Johan Hasselrot, adding a digital touch to their timeless vows.

Why NFT Rings?

The couple chose NFTs to symbolize the immutable nature of their commitment. As Rebecca explained:

“Real engagement rings are unique due to their sentimental value, and NFTs serve the same purpose in the digital realm.”

By recording their marriage on Ethereum, Peter and Rebecca ensured their vows would remain incorruptible, emphasizing blockchain’s role as a testament to permanence and trust.

The Cost of Tokenizing Marriage

Tokenizing the marriage wasn’t without cost. Peter created a smart contract containing 2,218 lines of code, issued on March 10.

  • Contract Issuance: 0.25 ETH ($450 at the time).
  • Additional Transactions: 0.0048 ETH ($87).
  • Miner Fees for Ceremony Transactions: Approximately $50.

Total Cost: $537

The ceremony itself involved transferring the NFT rings from the contract to the couple’s respective Ethereum wallets. Verified by Ethereum in just four minutes, their blockchain-recorded vows are as indelible as the technology itself.

NFTs in Everyday Life

This marriage showcases how NFTs extend beyond art and collectibles. Rebecca and Peter’s ceremony highlights the adaptability of blockchain for personal milestones, proving that anything can be tokenized.

Other notable recent NFT sales include:

  • Jack Dorsey’s First Tweet: Sold for $2.9 million.
  • Overly Attached Girlfriend Meme: Auctioned for 200 ETH (~$411,000).
  • The New York Times’ Tokenized Column: Sold for $560,000.

Final Thoughts

Rebecca Rose and Peter Kacherginsky’s blockchain-backed marriage represents a new era where blockchain and tradition intersect. Their NFT rings are more than digital assets—they’re a symbol of love that transcends time and is immortalized on Ethereum.

As the world embraces blockchain technology, it’s clear that NFTs are no longer confined to art and collectibles. They’re a gateway to redefining how we commemorate and preserve life’s most meaningful moments.
