Google Android Show I/O 2026 event stage with Googlebook laptop and Gemini AI features on display.

At its virtual “Android Show: I/O Edition” event on Tuesday, Google laid out an ambitious vision for the future of its ecosystem, announcing a new line of Gemini-powered laptops called Googlebooks, a feature that lets users “vibe-code” their own Android widgets, and a wave of AI-driven updates across Android Auto, Chrome, and messaging. The announcements arrive ahead of Google’s annual developer conference later this month, which is expected to double down on artificial intelligence after last year’s heavy AI focus.

Here’s a breakdown of everything Google announced and what it means for users.

Googlebooks: A New Kind of Laptop

Google introduced Googlebooks, a new line of laptops built from the ground up around its Gemini Intelligence platform. The company is partnering with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to produce the devices in various form factors, targeting a launch this fall. Googlebooks will ship with “Magic Pointer,” a cursor with built-in Gemini capabilities, deep Android phone integration that allows users to run mobile apps directly on the laptop, and the ability to create custom widgets. Google says these are the first laptops designed specifically to offer “personal and proactive help” through AI.

Create My Widget: Vibe-Coding for Everyone

Google unveiled “Create My Widget,” a feature that lets users generate custom Android widgets using natural language prompts. For example, a user could type “suggest three high-protein meal prep recipes every week” and receive a functional, resizable dashboard widget. The feature will first roll out on the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer, marking a significant step toward making AI-powered customization accessible to non-developers.

Android Auto Gets a Major Refresh

Android Auto is receiving a visual overhaul that brings an edge-to-edge display experience, more personalization options, and widgets that show key information at a glance. Media apps like YouTube Music and Spotify are being redesigned for easier in-car use. For the first time, Android Auto will support 60fps full HD video playback from apps like YouTube in supported vehicles later this year, starting with brands including BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo. Gemini is also rolling out broadly on Android Auto, enabling hands-free queries, brainstorming, and even food ordering through DoorDash.

3D Emoji and Creator Tools

All 4,000 Android emojis are being redesigned with a more expressive, less flat appearance, launching later this year. For creators, Android is introducing “Screen Reactions,” a feature that records both the screen and the user’s face simultaneously, similar to popular formats on TikTok and Instagram Reels. This feature will debut on Pixel devices this summer. Google also partnered with Meta to bring Ultra HDR, native stabilization, and night mode to Instagram on Android, along with optimized capture-to-upload pipelines to preserve image quality.

Gemini’s Expanding Agentic Features

Gemini is gaining the ability to perform multistep actions across apps. Users can take a photo of an event flyer and ask the assistant to find that event on travel sites like Expedia, or have it build a shopping cart from a grocery list displayed on screen. Gemini in Chrome is now available on Android, allowing users to summarize webpages and ask questions about content. An experimental auto-browse feature can navigate websites and complete tasks like booking tickets on behalf of the user. Additionally, Gemini can use personal data to help fill out complex forms through an opt-in feature.

Dictation, File Sharing, and iPhone Transfers

Gboard is getting “Rambler,” a dictation feature that cleans up speech by removing filler words like “ums” and “ahs” and understanding corrections mid-sentence. Quick Share is expanding: after last year’s Pixel-to-iPhone AirDrop compatibility, the feature will now work on devices from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor. Users without compatible devices can generate a QR code to share files to iPhones via the cloud. Quick Share will also be accessible within apps like WhatsApp soon. Google is also introducing a more comprehensive iOS-to-Android transfer tool that imports passwords, photos, messages, favorite apps, contacts, eSIM, and home screen layouts to Samsung Galaxy and Pixel devices later this year.

Digital Wellbeing and Security Upgrades

A new “Pause Point” feature lets users designate distracting apps and forces a 10-second break before launching them, with an optional timer to limit usage. On the security front, Google is expanding its default-on theft protections to all Android users globally, after earlier tests in Brazil. Features like Remote Lock and Theft Detection Lock will be enabled by default on Android 17 devices and those upgraded to the latest OS. The company is also reducing the number of PIN attempts allowed and introducing longer wait times between failures. Law enforcement will be able to access a device’s IMEI from the lock screen on Android 12 and higher. Theft protections will extend to Android 10 and up in select markets including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and the U.K. Pixel users with Advanced Protection Mode now get Intrusion Logging to investigate suspected spyware attacks.

Why This Matters

Google’s Android Show announcements signal a clear strategy: embed AI as the central layer across devices, from laptops to cars to phones, while also addressing practical user needs like customization, security, and cross-platform compatibility. The introduction of Googlebooks marks a direct challenge to traditional laptop makers and positions Gemini as a core selling point. For consumers, the updates promise a more intuitive, personalized, and secure experience, though the timeline for many features stretches into late 2026 and beyond.
