Hand toggling visible watermark setting on a smartphone with AI-generated art on screen

Google announced on Friday that it will now allow users to remove the visible watermark from AI-generated images, videos, and songs, a shift that balances creative flexibility with ongoing transparency efforts. The change, confirmed by Josh Woodward, Google’s VP for Gemini, applies to the company’s Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria models. The toggle to disable the visible mark will be available in Gemini and Google’s video editor, Flow, with support for Search coming soon.

Why Google is making visible watermarks optional

The decision reflects an evolving approach to labeling AI-generated media. While visible watermarks have served as a clear indicator of AI origin, they can also make content less useful for professional and creative work, particularly in design, marketing, and entertainment. Google’s solution is to keep the invisible SynthID watermark and C2PA metadata intact, ensuring that AI-generated content remains identifiable behind the scenes.

In a post on X, Woodward explained, “We’re striking a balance here between creative control and safety: while the visible watermarks are now optional, invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata are still being used for transparency. So you can still use Gemini or Search to see if an image was AI-generated.”

How the new watermark setting works

The feature is rolling out in the coming days. Once available, users can navigate to Settings > Media Watermark to turn the visible mark on or off. This gives users control over the final output while preserving the underlying verification mechanisms that help identify AI-generated content.

In addition to the watermark toggle, Google is open-sourcing a new library called Credentio, which allows developers to embed a local validation mechanism in their apps. This move aims to extend transparency beyond Google’s own platforms, enabling third-party applications to verify the origin of media files.

Context: Industry moves toward AI transparency

Google’s announcement follows Anthropic’s controversial decision to include a watermark in text and files generated by its Claude AI model, a move made to comply with EU regulations. The differing approaches highlight the ongoing industry debate over how to label AI-generated content without hindering usability.

For professionals and creators, the ability to remove visible watermarks could make AI-generated assets more practical for commercial use. However, the persistence of invisible markers ensures that accountability remains, allowing platforms and users to trace content origins when needed.

Conclusion

Google’s decision to make visible watermarks optional marks a pragmatic step in AI content management. By retaining SynthID and C2PA metadata, the company aims to support both creative freedom and responsible AI use. As the feature rolls out, users can expect a more streamlined workflow while maintaining confidence in content authenticity.
