The VaccineLedger
Tech Mahindra and blockchain startup StaTwig will roll out a “VaccineLedger” solution worldwide. They aim to address supply chain challenges that affect the stock and expiration of COVID-19 vaccines.
StaTwig, a UNICEF Innovation Fund graduate, started conducting its blockchain-based solution VaccineLedger in India and the United States in 2019. Fast forward to 2021, when the world immunizes against the COVID-19, the business has teamed with Indian IT behemoth Tech Mahindra to roll out the solution globally.
Vaccine Exchange Deal Between Israel and the UK
Recently an attempted vaccine exchange deal between Israel and the United Kingdom fell through. This resulted in the imminent waste of 1 million Pfizer doses. The necessity for such a solution is more evident than ever.
StaTwig’s Solution
StaTwig’s solution enables smart contracts and IoT technologies to monitor expiring supplies and maintains temperature control for sensitive equipment. By collaborating with Tech Mahindra, StaTwig will draw on the company’s experience in resource scalability and system integration. This is to help with the solution’s global implementation.
Furthermore, the two businesses have collaborated on many security modules for the solution’s mobile and web applications. These are tailored to match the needs of manufacturers and governments in various jurisdictions.
Challenges Of The World
The challenges faced by different countries remain uneven: in the US, millions of COVID-19 vaccine doses are on the verge of expiring this summer due to vaccination resistance in several states. Most nations in the Global South confront an even more serious issue: a complete absence of vaccines. While the Global North accounts for 85% of vaccine doses administered globally, the lowest-income countries account for only 0.3% of vaccine doses issued to date.
While a globally linked, efficient ledger system will not eradicate vaccination inequity, which has political roots, it can assist global actors in reducing waste, red tape, and delivery delays caused by logistical inefficiencies.
