Mozilla reverses its stance on crypto acceptance, after a community backlash

Following a backlash spurred by co-founder Jamie Zawinski’s vehement criticism, the Mozilla Foundation has put bitcoin donations on pause.

Last Monday, the Firefox browser’s development team tweeted a request for cryptocurrency donations.

Mozilla, on the other hand, said earlier today that it had suspended crypto donations owing to the internet discussion about cryptocurrency’s environmental impact.

Mozilla has stated that it will continue to investigate decentralized web technology. However, that it will only resume crypto donations if it is consistent with its climate aims. Mozilla will be honest in the review process and publish continuous updates, according to the company, in the spirit of open source.

The controversy began on December 31st, when the charity issued a request for cryptocurrency payments through the BitPay network.

Some members of the non-community, profit’s including Mozilla co-founder Jamie Zawinski, were critical of the organization’s message. Despite the fact that he has not been connected with Mozilla since 2000, he has harshly criticized the organization:

“Everyone involved in the project should be witheringly ashamed of this decision”
“to partner with planet-incinerating Ponzi grifters.”

Zawinski went on to discuss the cryptocurrency sector. Then, and what he believes is its unrealistic business strategy in a blog post on his website on January 5th. According to Zawinski, the industry creates pollution and then profits from it.

Some community members demanded that Mozilla remove their donation request. Then, and explain how taking cryptocurrency was in accordance with its aim to combat the urgent climate crisis.
