China’s digital yuan, or e-CNY, is widely regarded as the world’s most advanced central bank digital currency (CBDC).
From Oct. 22 to Dec. 31, there were four e-CNY airdrops: two in Beijing, one in Qingdao, and one in Haikou.
Three of the four airdrops in Beijing and Qingdao focused on distributing digital yuan in the form of coupons for public transit.
The next Winter Olympics are anticipated to be a high-profile showcase for digital e-CNY, but public ticket sales have been halted owing to worries about Covid-19.
