Crypto Scammers Target Etherscan Users with Massive Phishing Ads

Are you an Etherscan user? Watch out! A surge of sophisticated phishing ads is targeting crypto users like you. These scams aim to steal your digital assets, and they’re becoming increasingly prevalent. Let’s dive into what’s happening and how you can protect yourself.

Etherscan Targeted: Massive Phishing Ad Campaign Underway

Crypto community observers have raised alarms about a massive phishing ad campaign specifically targeting users of Etherscan, a popular Ethereum block explorer and analytics platform. These ads, often disguised as legitimate services, can lead to devastating losses if clicked.

Etherscan allows users to track wallet addresses and access information on Ethereum-based tokens. It even acquired Solana’s Solscan.io to promote equitable access to blockchain data. However, the platform’s ad system is now being exploited by scammers.

How are these Phishing Ads Penetrating Etherscan?

  • Compromised Ad Networks: Scammers are leveraging ad platforms like Coinzilla & Persona, which Etherscan uses, to display malicious ads.
  • Insufficient Filtering: These platforms may lack robust filtering mechanisms, allowing phishing ads to slip through the cracks.
  • Sophisticated Disguises: The ads often mimic legitimate crypto services, making it difficult for users to distinguish them from genuine offers.

Examples of Recent Phishing Ads

One example highlighted by Twitter user McBiblets was an ad for “Multichain Yield Optimizer,” suspected of being linked to around 23 phishing websites. Clicking on such ads can lead users to fake websites designed to steal their private keys and drain their wallets.

SlowMist’s Chief Information Security Officer also issued a warning, urging users to be extra cautious. Web3 anti-scam platform Scam Sniffer echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that these phishing ads aren’t limited to Etherscan.

The Cost of Crypto Phishing: A Staggering Loss

In 2023 alone, phishing scams resulted in a loss of $295 million for 324,000 crypto investors. Popular wallet drainers like Angel Drainer, Pink Drainer, Inferno Drainer, and Venom Drainer are commonly used by these scammers.

How to Protect Yourself from Crypto Phishing Scams

Here are some actionable steps you can take to safeguard your digital assets:

  • Double-Check URLs: Always verify the website address before entering any sensitive information.
  • Use Hardware Wallets: Hardware wallets provide an extra layer of security by keeping your private keys offline.
  • Be Wary of Suspicious Ads: If an ad seems too good to be true, it probably is. Avoid clicking on ads that promise unrealistic returns.
  • Install Anti-Phishing Extensions: Browser extensions like MetaMask’s built-in security features can help detect and block phishing attempts.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest phishing tactics and scams.

Etherscan’s Response and What to Expect

As of now, Etherscan has not yet responded to these alerts. However, the crypto community is eagerly awaiting a response and expects measures to be taken to address this issue.
