Chinese university creates a major called “metaverse” and names a department after it

The Information Engineering Department at Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology has been renamed the Metaverse Engineering Department after 25 years of operation. According to a report in the local media, the university claims to be the first in China to offer a metaverse major.

According to Hong Kong media outlet HK01, Pan Zhigeng, dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence, which houses the metaverse department, stated that in the future, the two institutions will collaborate to train master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral fellows who are specifically interested in the metaverse.

The university and Yalong Intelligent Equipment Group came to an agreement in August to establish a Metaverse Research Institute. Yalong is a company that offers business solutions for robots and digital transformation.

In general, the term “metaverse” refers to a collection of technologies that relate to interacting with virtual worlds. Cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are two examples of virtual assets that will be used in the metaverse.

Throughout 2022, metaverse research institutions began to spring up in China. A research facility for metaverse and virtual reality interaction with several Chinese colleges was launched in August by Tencent, Huawei, and Epic Games.

Renmin University of China established the Metaverse Research Center in April.

To increase the local economy and investment, the municipal administrations in Shanghai and Beijing have incorporated the metaverse into their development plans.
