A staggering 93% of cryptocurrencies launched since 2024 with a market capitalization exceeding $100 million are now trading below their initial token generation event (TGE) price, according to new data from analytics firm CryptoRank. The findings underscore the extreme volatility and high failure rate of new digital assets in the current market cycle.

The Scale of the Downturn

Out of 113 tokens launched between 2024 and 2026 that have reached a market cap above $100 million, only eight — or 7.1% — have managed to trade above their TGE price. The median return across all tokens in the study stands at a stark -95.7%, meaning most projects have lost nearly all their initial value.

Notable Outliers

A handful of tokens have defied the trend. HYPE leads the group with a gain of approximately 1,519%, followed by ONDO at 101.4%. Other relative outperformers include EVA and NIGHT, which rose 20.3% and 16.5%, respectively. These exceptions, however, are rare and highlight the selective nature of market success.

Why This Matters to Investors

The data serves as a cautionary tale for retail and institutional investors alike. The post-launch period for many tokens has been characterized by rapid price declines, often exacerbated by early investor sell-offs, low liquidity, and shifting market sentiment. For the vast majority of projects, the initial hype has not translated into sustained value.

Market Context and Implications

The period from 2024 to 2026 saw a surge in new token launches, many tied to decentralized finance (DeFi), gaming, and infrastructure projects. However, the broader cryptocurrency market has faced headwinds, including regulatory uncertainty and fluctuating investor appetite. The study’s findings suggest that even tokens reaching a $100 million market cap are not immune to severe drawdowns.

Conclusion

The CryptoRank analysis paints a sobering picture of the cryptocurrency market’s recent history. With a median loss of nearly 96% and only a small fraction of tokens in positive territory, the data emphasizes the importance of rigorous due diligence and realistic expectations for any new token investment. The few success stories, while impressive, are outliers in a market defined by risk.

FAQs

Q1: What does TGE stand for?
A TGE, or Token Generation Event, is the initial creation and distribution of a cryptocurrency’s tokens, often marking the first time they are available for trading. The TGE price is the price at which the token was initially sold.

Q2: Which tokens performed best in the study?
The top performers included HYPE (up ~1,519%), ONDO (up ~101.4%), EVA (up ~20.3%), and NIGHT (up ~16.5%). These are the exceptions, as the vast majority of tokens declined.

Q3: Why are so many tokens trading below their launch price?
Factors include early investor profit-taking, low liquidity, shifting market sentiment, regulatory pressures, and the inherent volatility of the cryptocurrency market. Many projects fail to maintain momentum after their initial launch.
