Changpeng Zhao, the CEO of Binance, revealed on Saturday that he tested positive for COVID-19 on a recent trip to El Salvador. It was unclear whether or not the executive was still in the nation.
Zhao, often known by his initials “CZ,” was recently in El Salvador with a number of other prominent figures in the crypto business. The country is preparing to create the world’s first Bitcoin bond, a move that the crypto industry is looking forward to. However, the government postponed the issuance, citing recent market volatility and the need for more work on the project.
CZ tweeted his COVID test results, describing them as “poor timing.” Zhao was seen with El Salvador President Nayib Bukele earlier this week. Although, it remained unclear if the President had also tested positive. CZ was seen speaking with Samson Mow, the author of the Bitcoin bond, this week, and he indicated he was “fine.”
Since February, El Salvador has seen a modest increase in COVID-19 infections, according to data.
CZ has been to numerous Latin American countries in the last two weeks. That’s, the most recent of which was El Salvador. The executive was pictured meeting with government officials from Rio De Janeiro. Then, and Sao Paulo, two of the country’s largest cities, at a crypto-related conference in Brazil.
The executive also met with Uruguayan government officials. While the purpose of these meetings was unknown, they fueled suspicion that Binance may expand its footprint on the continent.
Following El Salvador’s decision to legalize bitcoin last year, proponents predicted a flood of crypto adoption. While such a wave has yet to materialize, numerous important personalities in Mexico. Then, and Argentina have expressed interest in adopting cryptocurrency.
