Football Giant Lionel Messi Gets Part of His Contract Paid in Cryptocurrency

In his new deal with Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi chooses to earn bitcoin as part of his compensation. According to the club, a “welcome package” will be included in the $30 million payouts to the player. PSG paid him in cryptocurrency, but they didn’t specify how much was included in his payout. However, the club said it was “significant.”

According to rumours, Paris Saint-Germain, Lionel Messi would get a portion of his contract money in cryptocurrency. Barcelona soccer player Lionel Messi will get an estimated $30 million in fan tokens from the new club. This is part of a welcoming package provided to him as an incentive.

As for how much will be given out, the club informed Reuters that it would represent a “significant” portion.

PSG Trading Volumes and Price Rises

There has been a spike in trading volume and price for the club’s official fan token due to news and speculations of Messi joining the squad. In the days preceding up his visit, the token’s trading volume reportedly topped $1.2 billion. As a result of rumours that Messi would be joining the club, the price soared by 130%  in just five days.

It was introduced in January 2020 as part of the Socios.com token platform, with an initial price of two euros. Since its release, the token’s price has risen to $41.23 as of this writing. A certain amount of decision-making authority is given to the club’s members through these tokens.

Teams Embracing Fan Tokens

In the last several years, some teams have embraced fan tokens as a new source of money with great success. As a result, other groups, like AC Milan and Barcelona FC, have also released their own fan tokens to monetize on their fan base. As PSG’s Director of Partnerships, Marc Armstrong, has confirmed: We have been able to engage with a new global audience, creating a significant digital revenue stream.
