Sophisticated foreign government-backed group breaches U.S. treasury

The U.S. Treasury Department underwent a massive security breach targeting internal servers on a late Sunday night. A Reuters reports on Dec. 13 advocated that a sophisticated hacking group supported by a foreign government stole data from the U.S. departments. The departments include the U.S. Treasury Department and NITA (National Telecommunications and Information Administration), with the Department of Commerce. Following the investigation, the foreign governments seem to support the hackers in the security breach.

U.S. Treasury’s Microsoft Office 365 underwent security breach

According to the reports, emails pertaining to the NTIA office, functioning under the Department of Commerce, were infiltrated. According to people familiar with the matter, they reiterated the U.S. department’s Microsoft Office 365 breach. They also revealed that this was not a current event; however, outside parties might have controlled the network for months.

The internal emails are not something to be extremely worried about, as they may just be the point of the breach. However, offenders of the breach remain unidentified by the U.S. authorities. Nevertheless, Russian natives may be accountable for the attack. This is yet to be confirmed, although inquiries are in process with the FBI’s help and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Various law officials hurried to investigate the matter deeply; due to trading concerns, thus questioning U.S surveillance.

The security breach occurs weeks after Donald Trump unceremoniously ousted Christopher Krebs. He is now-former director of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Krebs earned his walking papers after saying, in his official position, that 2020’s election was amongst the most reliable in modern history.

The security breach blew up on crypto Twitter, as various Bitcoin advocates pounced on the occasion to display Bitcoin’s benefits (BTC) and its opposition to being hacked. Anthony Pompliano, a Bitcoin pioneer and host of his renowned crypto-friendly podcast “The Pomp” podcast, expressed his views by saying that Bitcoin remain secure. However, Pompliano’s response was fitted with a few differences, as others stated that Bitcoin has certainly in its existence been hacked before. Richard Heart, the founder of HEX.com, states that Bitcoin was hacked in 2010 when someone coined 184 Billion extra #BTC.
