U.K. Judge denies U.S. Extradition of Julian Assange

United Kingdom judge Vanessa Baraitser rejects the United States’ proposal to extradite Julian Assange, the Wikileaks founder. Moreover, U.S. prosecutors had indicted Assange on 17 espionage charges, and one of the them accounts for computer misuse. The charges hold the maximum sentence of 175 years in prison.

Lawyers for Julian Assange states that he was working as a journalist and is authorized to First Amendment protections of freedom of speech for posting revealed documents that disclosed U.S. military misconduct in Iraq and Afghanistan. The defense claimed that extradition endangers Assange’s human rights. He risks a grossly excessive sentence and imprisonment in draconian and brutal conditions that aggravate his extreme depression and other mental health problems.

Mexico provides Political Asylum to Julian Assange.

Moreover, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the sitting president of Mexico, has provided political asylum to Assange. Obrador said to a daily press briefing that the British judge’s judgment to deny the U.S. government was a milestone of justice. He stated that Assange is a journalist and should receive another chance.

Nevertheless, the cryptocurrency community has been transmitting Assange and Wikileaks somewhat of crypto-funding after his arrest in 2019. Recently, the Wikileaks BTC donation address carries 19.66 BTC or over $600k utilizing today’s exchange rates. Bitcoin cash (BCH) supporters have contributed 222.99 BCH or approximately $87k at current BCH prices. Wikileaks receives private transfers of zcash (ZEC) and monero (XMR) as well. Since his detention in 2019, Assange has consumed his time at the high-security Belmarsh Prison. If sent to the U.S., Assange will face 18 cyberattack crimes for hacking government computer systems. He is also responsible for espionage, and the total of U.S. charges could witness Assange reach a 175-year sentence in prison.

Further, out of a total of 24.21 BTC donations shipped to the nonprofit organization, Wikileaks has only expended 4.55 BTC to date ($140k). Moreover, it holds various other coins on a long term basis. The addresses show donations, indicate that the organization has over $800,000 worth of crypto donations today.
