Digital Finance Strengthens Economies in Times of Conflict

And reduces dependence on single points of failure or control

By Bobby Zhou, Founding Partner, Aqua Labs Investments

A key advantage of digital financial infrastructure is its ability to address both historical and ongoing challenges faced by the traditional financial system. From global shutdowns to high costs, persistent fraud, cyber-crime, and inaccessibility, the problems are self-evident.

Wars expose the fragilities of conventional financial systems, particularly in an era of real-time, borderless transactions. Fortunately, digital infrastructure, including business models, technology, and applications is providing broader access and critical benefits during crises.

Shortcomings of Traditional Finance

The limitations of conventional financial systems are evident. Institutions face disruptions due to urban and national shutdowns, affecting normal operations and limiting service hours. Many banks across states affected by war operate under emergency regulations and face these types of challenges.

However, new financial infrastructure provides countries with an opportunity for operational continuity, ensuring that transactions can continue 24/7. As traditional banking systems become inaccessible, modern and decentralized systems continue to function. Blockchain and cloud-based systems maintain their functionality, demonstrating resilience in contrast to traditional banking. Increasingly, this resilience is not just technological but geopolitical, reducing dependence on single points of failure or control.

When connections are restricted during sanctions, blockchain-based payment networks allow companies to continue cross-border settlements, without relying on traditional banks. Similarly, mobile money platforms enable citizens and small businesses to send and receive payments even when physical banking is inaccessible.

Countries rely on their allies at times of need. Digital financial infrastructure enables individuals to receive aid quickly from friends, family, and even international donors, in ways traditional banking cannot. Digital transaction infrastructure increases the opportunities for these actions at the worst of times.

Beyond ensuring operational continuity, digital financial infrastructure also supports financial inclusion. Through lower barriers to entry encompassing mobile wallets, digital banking apps, and blockchain-based platforms, underserved populations including rural communities, refugees, and small entrepreneurs can more easily participate in economic activity.

Driving inclusivity strengthens social resilience during crises and helps to maintain commercial activity when conventional institutions are disrupted. This leads to a more adaptable and equitable financial ecosystem.

Enhanced Protection for Shareholders, Governments and Consumers

Global uncertainty continues to be at a maximum, and further damage to the markets cannot be ruled out. In this context, digital infrastructure also provides enhanced protection for current or future panicked shareholders, who can access cloud-based portfolio management tools with real-time risk analytics to prevent sudden losses.

Automated trading platforms with built-in circuit breakers help investors shield their funds when market volatility spikes, and digital wallets allow investors to quickly move assets to stablecoins, reducing exposure to crashing markets.

Additionally, established financial systems have become stagnant due to uncertainty and the disruptions to the flow of information. Digitization has an opposing effect. By improving the access and flow of information, impending negative news that causes unexpected, catastrophic shocks in the markets is less likely to have such drastic consequences. Real-time data distribution allows investors to make informed decisions instead of making rushed ones that contribute to wild swings in the market. By reducing sudden, unanticipated actions, decentralized finance helps to maintain price stability.

Amid turbulent periods, countries can maintain reliance on digital financial systems. They provide services that are frequently difficult or impossible to preserve during periods of conflict. These outcomes have also been observed in Ukraine. Many Ukrainians had lost access to their banks and were forced to flee their homes. In a unified response from the rest of the world, donations were so significant that the Ukrainian government set up and publicized official cryptocurrency wallets to receive funds quickly and safely. This is just one example of a modern solution that governments can offer.

The next crisis is probably lying in wait around the corner, making the importance of digital infrastructure increasingly clear. At the same time, individuals, governments, and businesses will consistently rely on and reap the benefits of digitization.

The solution is straightforward, but the timeline is not: building robust digital financial infrastructure is no longer a long-term ambition, but an immediate economic and strategic necessity.
