Digital trading dashboard showing RWA volume surpassing crypto volume on Hyperliquid

In a first for the decentralized exchange landscape, Hyperliquid’s weekly trading volume in real-world assets (RWAs) has exceeded its cryptocurrency trading volume, according to data shared by Lorenzo Valente, crypto research director at Ark Invest.

A shift in decentralized exchange dynamics

Valente noted on X that RWA trading accounted for 54% of Hyperliquid’s total volume over the past week, marking the first time this category has surpassed crypto trading. The milestone reflects a growing appetite for tokenized traditional assets within decentralized finance (DeFi) infrastructure.

Since the implementation of HIP-3, Hyperliquid’s single-stock trading products have seen particularly strong uptake. Valente reported that stock-based RWA volume now makes up 61% of total RWA activity on the platform, having outpaced index and commodity products since June.

Market context and scale

The broader decentralized exchange perpetual futures market saw $79 billion in total volume last week, with Hyperliquid accounting for $50 billion of that figure. Of that amount, $26 billion came from HIP-3-based RWA trading. According to Valente, Hyperliquid’s RWA market size now exceeds the combined cryptocurrency perpetual futures trading volume of all other decentralized exchanges.

What this means for DeFi and tokenization

This development signals a potential inflection point for the tokenization of traditional assets. While cryptocurrency trading has long dominated decentralized exchange activity, the rise of RWA volume on Hyperliquid suggests that traders and institutions are increasingly treating tokenized stocks and other real-world assets as viable trading instruments within DeFi protocols.

The trend also highlights the growing role of specialized products like HIP-3, which enable single-stock exposure on-chain. If sustained, this shift could reshape how decentralized exchanges compete with traditional finance platforms, particularly in markets for equities and commodities.

Conclusion

Hyperliquid’s achievement of surpassing crypto volume with RWA trading marks a notable moment in the evolution of decentralized finance. While it remains to be seen whether this trend continues, the data from Ark Invest’s research points to a meaningful change in trader behavior and platform adoption. For now, the milestone underscores the expanding utility of DeFi beyond purely crypto-native assets.

FAQs

Q1: What is Hyperliquid?
Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange (DEX) that offers perpetual futures trading for both cryptocurrencies and tokenized real-world assets, including single stocks and commodities.

Q2: What is HIP-3?
HIP-3 is a proposal implemented on Hyperliquid that introduced single-stock trading products, allowing users to trade tokenized versions of traditional equities on-chain.

Q3: Why does RWA volume overtaking crypto volume matter?
