Altcoin Volume Hits 4x Bitcoin as Doctor Profit Exits Alts

Trading desk with Bitcoin and altcoin price charts, illustrating altcoin volume running four times higher than Bitcoin's

Altcoin spot trading volume is now running at four times the level of Bitcoin’s, and at least one prominent trader has decided that is a reason to leave rather than a reason to buy. Doctor Profit, an analyst followed on X, said he sold ONDO at a 73% profit, closed HBAR with a smaller gain, and has no interest in buying altcoins while conditions remain this hot, according to Cryptopotato.

Altcoin spot trading volume is now four times higher than Bitcoin’s, and trader Doctor Profit has sold ONDO for a 73% profit, closed HBAR, and opened Bitcoin shorts at $86,200. The altcoin market cap including Ethereum, tracked as Total2, has absorbed more than $371 billion in inflows since June 2026, a 45% increase.

Separately, CryptoSlate reported that prediction-market operator Kalshi is ending a long-running trader-volume incentive program nearly a year early — a change that lands at the same moment the quality of trading activity across crypto-adjacent venues is drawing closer attention. The two stories point in the same direction from different angles: record participation and rising leverage are forcing market participants and platform operators to ask what is actually behind the numbers.

Under the Kalshi change, which CryptoSlate covered on Sept. 30, the exchange told the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in a Sept. 28 filing that its Volume Incentive Program will terminate no earlier than Oct. 13 — well ahead of its originally scheduled end date of Oct. 1, 2027. The filing does not tie the early termination to any concern about trading patterns, and Kalshi could terminate the program at its discretion under its terms.

Two reports, one question: what is driving the volume?

Cryptopotato’s account is built around market internals. According to Darkfost, a major shift is visible on Binance, where 87% of listed altcoins are trading above their 200-day moving average — up from August, when 80% were still below that trend line. Darkfost also pointed to a developing bearish divergence on Total2’s RSI, which suggests momentum may be starting to cool.

CryptoSlate’s reporting frames a parallel issue on the venue side. Kalshi is replacing the broad volume program with a Deposit and Trading Reward Incentive Program, which the CFTC docket lists as received Sept. 25, with a filing setting Sept. 28 as the earliest effective date. The two programs are not formally described as replacements and can overlap before the older one ends.

The structural difference matters. The old program let Kalshi designate eligible markets and set fixed reward pools, with traders receiving a share based on their proportion of eligible volume, capped at half a cent per contract. Perpetual futures were eligible and exempt from the program’s normal 3-cent to 97-cent qualifying price range. The new framework instead offers time-limited promotions of three to 90 days that can target groups by account age, funding status, prior trading activity, inactivity, geography, and past participation in specific contract categories.

Individual promotions can pay up to $2,500 per participant, with total rewards capped at $5,000 per person over the program’s planned two-year life. The filing also states that transactions under inquiry for potential self-matching, wash trading, prearranged trading, or other prohibited practices would be excluded from promotional rewards, and that Kalshi’s surveillance staff would apply heightened monitoring to participants receiving incentives.

The timing is notable. According to CryptoSlate, the CFTC has reportedly examined activity after researchers identified repetitive trades around fixed dollar amounts, including roughly $5,500 in Ethereum perpetuals. Kalshi has said it is not under investigation and has rejected allegations of wash trading, attributing the repeated transactions to market makers placing fixed-size quotes that other traders repeatedly hit. The filing does not explain why the program is ending early.

Why it matters

For traders, the Cryptopotato report is a leverage and positioning signal. When spot volume in a sector runs four times the market’s benchmark asset and 87% of listed altcoins sit above their 200-day average on Binance, the crowd is already in. Doctor Profit’s response — take the ONDO gain, close HBAR, stay out — reflects a view that these conditions tend to precede a shakeout rather than extend indefinitely. His Bitcoin short at $86,200 is a direct expression of that view.

The Kalshi story matters for a different reason. The exchange has repeatedly broken trading records during September, with data compiled by DeFiRate showing $3.24 billion handled on Sept. 27 and weekly volume of $15.66 billion in the seven days through that date, per CryptoSlate. Its share of tracked prediction-market volume stood near 80%. Those are real numbers, but the shift from broad volume subsidies to targeted deposit and trading rewards changes how much of the activity is being paid for directly — a distinction investors will have to weigh as Kalshi pursues a reported $40 billion valuation.

What to watch

On the market side, the level Doctor Profit flagged is the one to track: a pullback toward roughly $79,000 near the 50-week moving average. He cited bearish signals across RSI, MACD/PPO, and MFI, and noted ADX showed weaker trend strength. A break lower would test whether the altcoin inflow surge Darkfost documented was durable demand or a liquidity grab.

On the platform side, the date to watch is Oct. 13, the earliest point at which Kalshi’s volume incentive program can end. How its trading quality and volume hold up once the broad subsidies roll off — and while the new targeted promotions ramp up — is the measurement that will matter to the investors Kalshi is reportedly courting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Doctor Profit selling altcoins now?

He said market conditions are too hot to buy altcoins, called them a great distraction and liquidity grab, and instead opened a Bitcoin short at $86,200 with additional short orders between $86,500 and $89,500.

What is Total2 and why does it matter here?

Total2 tracks the altcoin market cap including Ethereum. Cryptopotato reported that it absorbed more than $371 billion in inflows since June 2026, a 45% increase in a few months.

Why did Kalshi end its volume incentive program early?

Kalshi told the CFTC the program would terminate no earlier than Oct. 13, well ahead of its originally scheduled Oct. 1, 2027 end date, but the filing did not link the decision to concerns about trading patterns.

Is Kalshi under investigation for wash trading?

The company has said it is not under investigation and has rejected allegations of wash trading, attributing repeated transactions to market makers placing fixed-size quotes that other traders hit.

What should traders watch next in this story?

The two signals to track are whether Bitcoin confirms the pullback Doctor Profit flagged toward around $79,000 near the 50-week moving average, and how Kalshi’s trading quality holds up once the new deposit-and-trading rewards framework replaces the volume program.
